It was developed as an ornamental cultivar of the European Beech Tree and is a popular tree in both England and the USA. The tree owes its purple colour to the high anthocyanin levels in the tissues of the leaves. These are water-soluble pigments in red, purple or blue hues, depending on the pH levels.
